Today in the communications class, we started to prepare for the upcoming auto show. At the auto show, MINDDRIVE will have two cars and a booth where students will work in shifts representing MINDDRIVE and talking about the program they are in and their experiences. Audrey came in and helped give us talking points and practice questions to get us more comfortable with public speaking. When asked, “What is MINDDRIVE” I responded, “It is a program where you can learn new skills. For example, I am in the communications class and I get to work on my creative writing, photography, and social media skills. The communications class is really the voice behind the automotive class.”
Next, we broke into our teams and the writing team did a free write. Our topic for today was, “You wake up in the bathroom and look in the mirror. A different face stares back at you. Begin your story here.” There were four of us writing on this topic, here are a couple of the stories.
As I stare at the face that was not mine, I began to panic. I ran out of the bathroom and asked my sister, “What do you see.” She said, “You.” I ran back into the bathroom and looked at myself, “OH MY GOODNESS WHO ARE YOU?” I yelled. The image began to speak, “I am you, who are you?” I said, “I am La’Shay, what makes you think you’re me.” We both stared perversely at each other without a murmur. I suddenly got upset and began to walk out of the room, before I made it to the doorway a voice said, “How do you know that your reflection is what everyone sees?” Before the voice could finish the sentence I was back in the mirror, I thought hard. Maybe what we usually see in the mirror is not always what we think is ourselves. You never see your face unless it’s in a mirror, could what you’re used to seeing really be you?

OMG! Where did I go? I can deal with this. I look in the mirror and I have blonde hair, blue eyes, lashes as long as the girls in the Covergirl commercials, perfect eyebrows. Who am I? What will my mom think? Will she totally disown me? She’ll throw me out. I walk back into my room and my dog barks at me, “roof roof, arrf arrf!” My mom runs upstairs, “What’s going on? Who are you? Where is my daughter?” I laugh, “Oh I ate her. She’s inside of me.”

The photography team continued to work on getting closeup shots of all of the students and mentors for the auto show. The social media team scheduled all Facebook and Twitter posts for the week, and continued to develop the car personalities. They also practiced interviewing people. And, the video team did a mock news report, which Taejah participated in (see the picture above) and talked about how hard it is to wake up in the morning. Look out for updates in the automotive class next week!
